Happy Foraging is all for supporting local farmers. Buying and eating local food is great for your health and the health of our planet too, especially if you stick to organic produce. The ingredients are fresher and taste better since they don't have to spend lots of time being transported on trucks. Usually, the veggies and fruits are harvested the same day they're ready for sale, keeping them loaded with flavor and nutrients for you. Major health bonus!
Getting to know where your food comes from and meeting your farmer is exciting. You can learn how your food was produced. If you're eager for a more sustainable lifestyle this is an easy and fun way to step up your eco-friendly efforts. Another great benefit of supporting local agriculture, is it helps the local economy thrive. The easiest way to reach your local farmers is by checking out your town's farmers' market. You can find farms and markets near you through localharvest.org.
Once you discover the farms near where you live, it's important to consider how the farmers are tending the land. Farmers that take good care of their soil will have much better quality produce. Unfortunately, there are farmers that only care about the commerce their farm might generate and proper land management isn't their primary focus.
Why does this matter? Well, if you like good food, clean air and clean water and want future generations to experience those basic needs, land management is something we all need to care about. We need to encourage more farmers to practice responsible farming and proper soil management. This will help protect our health and also the health of our planet. There's an excellent documentary on Netflix right now, 'Kiss the Ground', that details the importance of soil health and how it's impacting climate change. Check it out and spread the word! We need to focus all efforts on healing our lands.
Cure Organic Farm is the favorite local farm for Happy Foraging. Biking over to Cure Organic's farm stand each week to pick up the freshest vegetables and eggs is so fun! They even have a small bike rack close to the entry. Which we love!! It's super awesome they're considerate of the cyclists that visit. There's usually something new to be found each week at their lovely farm stand which inspires the creation of new recipes and flavor combinations in our kitchen. If you're on the Front Range, check out Cure's website and Instagram page (@cureorganicfarm) to stay in the loop on what's in season. Pictured below are some tasty finds from their farm stand.
